WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP?

A heat pump is type of HVAC system for your home. Powered by electricity, it is an outside unit capable of both heating and cooling. In colder weather, it pulls air from the outside and and transfers it indoors to give you optimum comfort. When the temperature outside is warm, the system reverses, cooling your home. Heat pumps are an environmentally friendly option because they do not burn fossil fuels like a furnace. They are used mostly in milder climates, and may be used in conjunction with a furnace where temperatures are
exceptionally low.

TYPES OF HEAT PUMPS

There are two types of heat pumps:

Air Source Heat Pump

Air source heat pumps are best for mild climates that seldom see below-freezing temperatures. Because they utilize a reversing valve, air source heat pumps can provide both efficient heating and cooling for your home. An air source heat pump moves heat through your home by extracting it from the air instead of using fuel to generate heat. These systems are capable of delivering up to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes by transferring heat rather than converting from a fuel, making it an energy-efficient option. Air source heat pumps are used in almost all parts of the United States, except where temperatures may reach subfreezing levels for extended periods of time.

Geothermal Heat Pumps:

Geothermal heat pumps create heat in an environmentally efficient way by using the earth’s energy. Geothermal heat pumps are sometimes referred to as earth coupled, ground-source, or water source heat pumps. They use the relatively consistent temperature of the earth instead of the outside air temperature. Temperatures just a few feet below the earth surface remain cooler than the air in extreme summer temperatures, and warmer than sub-zero temperatures in the winter. Geothermal heat pumps use a ground heat exchanger to take advantage of these favorable temperatures to heat and cool, and can also supply a house with hot water.
